About The Artist
"I look for new ways to represent the joy of experiencing the landscape. I am inspired by the drama of light which presents colours and rythmns, as it moves along forms, and hightens colours. My dynamic compositions are a contemplative and heartfelt response to my experiences, representing the “visual music” I feel. Each brushstroke is like a colour note or chord playing out the scene offering a connection with the viewer through dynamic movement and exciting colour." --Jane Appleby
Jane Appleby is an expressive painter, inspired by the Canadian landscape often painting outdoors in the plein air tradition of the Canadian Group of Seven. Her abstract and impressionistic work has been described as ‘Emily Carr meets Gauguin’, inspired by nature and colourfully unique.
Jane was born in the Czech Republic and immigrated to Vancouver in 1969 with her family and recalls the freedom she felt when experiencing the beautiful natural settings of the west coast.
Along with taking numerous workshops over the 25 years she also has a Fine Arts Techniques Certificate from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and a Biology Degree from Simon Fraser University.
The late Robert Genn, dubbed Jane a full member of “The 37 Club” - fast and purposeful painting in 37 minutes and 37 strokes. She now teaches this method, which was instrumental in developing her style.
Jane has received several awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists, written articles for the Art Venues Magazine, and facilitated Plein-Air Paint-Outs. She instructs workshops at Coquitlam’s Place Des Arts in Coquitlam and to various art groups. On occasion she can be found teaching watercolours on the Cunard Cruise Lines overseas. She shares her inspirations and painting methods on her You Tube Channel: Jane Appleby Art where she encourages us to be inspired by nature and find the “Artist in all of us.” Jane's work is currently represented by four galleries throughout BC and her work is collected internationally.
