About The Artist
Henry Koenig was born in Calgary in 1956 but since the age of 7 grew up on a 5 acre apple orchard in Kaleden in the South Okanagan with his brother and parents. Since he was a young student Henry always excelled at art projects and he threw his heart and soul into anything requiring creative effort. He began painting seriously at age 15. Schooling led him towards a career as a mechanic in the oil field but art and family brought him back home to the Okanagan. Henry Koenig is primarily self-taught, and reminds us that he is an eternal student. A down to earth individual, Henry is humble and practical and shares that he is always searching to better himself from one painting to the next. He reaches for the perfect combination of colour and to increase his understanding of focal point. He can be found studying great artists in books and documentaries, instructional videos by artists he admires, like Stephen Bauman's youtube videos that focus on point of view, that glow, light & dark. Henry is keen to study the Swedish American impressionis painter Johan Fabian Carlsen (1875-1945) especially his winter forest landscapes which is also a favourite subject to paint for Henry.
The forest scenes Henry Koenig paints are straight from the imagination, not from photographs. Henry does paint en plein air and goes on hiking expeditions always to get inspiration with the next painting in mind. Henry's favourite colour combinations are burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and indigo, white and burnt umber, because of the delicious combination of natural hues you can make with those colours. He is especially fascinated by night time and dawn and dusk light, when that glow of light is extra special and colours are rare and fleeting because that is where the magic is.
"If I can improve even by 1% on my next painting from the one I've just finished, I'm moving ahead improving myself as an artist with each painting and one day they'll hopefully be masterpieces. I'm forever grateful for the collectors of my paintings and pleased that they share in my love of the Canadian wilderness."
